One of the world’s fastest growing applications of yoga will be available to northwest Valley residents beginning next Friday, April 20 with the grand opening of Bikram Yoga North Phoenix at Stetson Village Shopping Center, a 144,360-square-foot development located at the northeast corner of 39th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.
Owned and operated by Jim and Robin Grieco, the new 3,091-square-foot yoga studio will offer 26 postures of yoga that systematically work every part of the human body to give internal organs, veins, ligaments and muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function.
All classes next weekend (Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22) will be entirely free.
The Griecos said the new studio’s classes will be taught and overseen by certified Bikram Yoga teachers who use specific dialogue that was created by Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury, founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India™. The specific 26-posture series never changes, which makes Bikram Yoga a great workout for both the beginning and experienced student.
The new studio – which will maintain a temperature of 105F – will allow students to “change the construction of their bodies from the inside out — from bones to skin and from fingertips to toes,” the Griecos said. Often called the “torture chamber,” by Bikram, the specially-designed yoga room helps flush away waste products, the toxins of all glands and organs of the body. The practice provides a natural irrigation of the body through the circulatory system, with the help of the respiratory system.
The 105F temperature and 40% humidity environment provides several advantages:
- Keeps the body from overheating;
- Protects muscles to allow for deeper stretching;
- Detoxes the body by opening pore to let toxins out;
- Thins the blood to clear the circulatory system;
- Increases the heart rate for better a cardiovascular workout;
- Improves strength by putting muscle tissue in an optimal state for reorganization;
- Reorganizes the lipids (fats in the muscular structure.
In addition to its physical advantages, Bikram Yoga also helps balance emotions. “Physiologically, regular practice harmonizes the nervous and endocrine systems, two systems that figure in emotional well-being,” they said. “In addition, practicing Bikram Yoga cultivates the mental faculties of self-control, concentration, determination and patience. When we are aware, we can exercise choice in our response which helps us balance our emotional life,” they concluded.
Bikram Yoga North Phoenix – expected to open sometime in the beginning of April – will offer a variety of class times in the vigorous discipline. Studio hours will vary based on student needs, with daytime and evening classes offered throughout the week. The Griecos will be offering free classes the first Saturday and Sunday that the studio is open, along with discounted pricing throughout their pre-opening preparation and through the first month of operation. James R. Pederson, senior leasing agent for The Pederson Group, developer of the center, said, “Bikram Yoga is one of the fast growing exercise disciplines in the entire country. We believe the opening of the new studio will be a welcome addition to the trade area for those already undertaking this rigorous form of exercise, and for a segment of the population that would like to find out more about it.”
Stetson Village – which is anchored by a 57,860-square-foot Safeway Store – has “developed into a vibrant neighborhood shopping center that offers an array of new national and local retailers to the trade area, along with service uses and quality neighborhood restaurants,” Pederson said.
The shopping center, which opened in November of 2008, incorporates an upscale design incorporating natural desert stones, stone tile, and a series of restaurant patios, upscale landscaping and a tree-lined entrance. It is located in close proximity to some of the northwest area’s newest upscale residential developments, including Stetson Hills, a master-planned community anticipated to have approximately 4,000 new homes.
For more than 28 years The Pederson Group has been a premier Phoenix-based real estate development company specializing in upscale retail projects. The company has developed and remodeled more than 27 highly successful retail and mixed-use projects in the greater Phoenix area, and has developed shopping centers totaling more than five million square feet.
